Public Phone Public Phone Public Phone

Public phone is pronounced 'Koh-shu Denwa' in Japanese. It is provided by NTT East/West.

It is in front of and inside of the station and store, or on the road. Until ten years ago, the many public telephones had been in the street. However, those numbers fell off by the mobile phone being popular recently. (5 images)

Denwa Box

  We called 'Denwa-Box' about this.
This was the standard style of Japanese Public Phone before. More than 10 years ago we could look at it but recently the public telephone is reducing the number as a mobile phone spreads. Now we can still find this in front of the station, on the main road. (1 image)

Coins

For public phone ¥10 and ¥100 coin is only available.

When you charge ¥10 and ¥100 coin together, ¥10 coin is spend first. When you charge ¥100 coin only, the changes cannot be got even if duration of your calling is short. And in the case you make a miscalling to someone and he takes it, You lose a ¥100 at all if you didn't charge ¥10 coins. So when you make a calling, I recommend to charging the ¥10 coins together. How to call

Calling

You hang the receiver and charge the credit, and next when the signal sound changes to the continuous one, you dial the phone number.
When you call to the same city-code area, you can cut city-code off. But when you call to other area and mobile phone, you need input all number.
When you call to out of japan directly by public phone, you need input 0033010... or 001010... , refer here. However, the public phone must correspond to the international call then. Some of them say 'Domestic' but it is avaialble to make an international call by the calling card. Refer here.
